I first bought Etude House Play 101 Pencil shades 12 and 16 (reviewed here), then went back for shades 3, 15 and 25 (reviewed here). Next were 27 and 41 (reviewed here) and 4, 8, 13 and 50 (reviewed here). These pencils are so addicting that I want to collect them all. I bought 8 more Play 101 Pencils during the Etude House Hello New Year Sale, so I was able to buy them at 20% off. 🙂

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #1
Etude House Play 101 Pencils No 1 Black

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #1 is a plain, intense black with a creamy finish. When I bought it, I thought it has a matte finish. But when I swatched it at home, I found that it has a creamy finish. It is recommended for use as an eye shadow or eye liner. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #1 has a smooth texture and it glides easily along the lash line. Just remember to keep your eyelids a little taut by gently pushing your temples/outer eye area a little bit up and outwards. This prevents tugging on the eyes and also helps you draw a straighter and more precise eye line.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #1 is like a kohl eyeliner which looks better when smudged. I have tried to use it without smudging/blending and just let it set on its own. I found that doing this makes it a little bit more prone to smudging after a while. Especially on oily lids like mine. 🙁 The next time I used it, I immediately smudged it after application. It does dry quite fast so I had to quickly smudge it out before it set and dried completely. This second method works better for me, as I didn’t experience any smudging the whole time I wore it.

In the arm swatch above, I only smudged it a little bit. But you’ll notice how the color turns lighter when smudged, which would really look great for a smokey eye makeup look. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #1 is long-lasting even on my oily lids and I don’t get raccoon eyes even after 5 hours of wearing it. It lasts around 5 to 7 hours and was fairly easy to remove using a good eye makeup remover.

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #2

Etude House Play 101 Pencil #2 has a glittery finish and it is recommended for use as an eye shadow or eye liner as well. It is also an intense black, but it has silver micro glitters which makes it more glamorous and fun. It has a smooth texture and applies rather easily. Even without having to hold/push out my outer eye area, I don’t experience any tugging with it. The only thing I don’t like is some of the micro glitters falling out. But that can easily be cleaned up, so I don’t worry too much about fallouts, unless they get in my eyes.

I wouldn’t use Etude House Play 101 Pencil #2 for the waterline, because the micro glitters might get in the eyes. My eyes turn red, like I’ve just cried for hours, when glitters do get in them. It doesn’t look good to have red eyes when you’re going out, so I’m really careful when working with glittery makeup. However, it looks great when applied along the outer lower lash line, and of course, on the upper lash line.

In the arm swatch above, I tried to smudge it immediately after drawing the line but was only able to smudge it a bit. Etude House Play 101 Pencil #2 dries fast and sets pretty quickly. It also lasts a long time, around 7 to 8 hours on me and it was also very easy to remove with an eye makeup remover.

The Etude House Play 101 Pencils come with a built-in sharpener at the other end of the pencil. To get more product out, all you have to do is twist the colored part at the end of the pencil where the sharpener is housed. Then use the hidden sharpener if you need to sharpen the tip.
